Modern Psychoanalytic Therapy

Modern psychoanalytic therapy is built on the work of Freud’s psychoanalysis, but it has been refined, reformed, and adapted to reach more people and be more helpful.

Updating Psychoanalyis Theory

Sigmund Freud theorized that human behavior is influenced by unconscious memories, thoughts, and urges. His ideas delve into the experiences of early childhood and have an emphasis on development through psychosexual stages.

In the 1950s, Hyman Spotnitz began to expand on Freud’s theory by focusing his efforts on treating people diagnosed with narcissism and schizophrenia. Until then, it was believed that psychoanalysis could not help these individuals. Hyman’s methods proved to be helpful for these conditions as well as a wide range of pathologies including:

  • Anxiety
  • Narcissism
  • Schizophrenia
  • Depression
  • Trauma
  • Low self-esteem
  • Self destruction behavioral patterns

Thanks to the ever developing approach to psychoanalytic therapy, more people can better manage their mental health struggles and stress.

Difference Between Modern Psychoanalytic Therapy and Freudian Psychoanalysis

Modern psychoanalytic therapy is a talk therapy that encourages analysts to join your reality. This is different from the traditional approach which made the therapist an analyst only. The modern approach looks like a free flowing conversation with the therapist only interjecting on occasion. Psychoanalytic therapy continues to improve, it looks quite a bit different than it did in Freud’s day.

Emotional Communication

Modern psychoanalytic therapists understand that information is not the cure to mental health. You’re encouraged to talk about how you feel as you discover the emotions behind the truth.

The Client Becomes the Expert

Traditional psychoanalysis viewed the analyst as the expert. Modern psychoanalysis places you in the expert chair. You know your experiences best.

Narcissistic Transference

Narcissistic transference is when you begin to relate to your therapist as if they were part of your mind. This is important when dealing with aggressive thoughts.

Less About Libido

Modern psychoanalytic therapy deemphasized Freud’s theories about sexual development and focused on the social environment instead.
