How to Choose an Inpatient Mental Health Program
When choosing an inpatient mental health program, you have several important factors to consider such as:
- Location
- Programming
- Financing
- Overall environment
It’s vital that you choose what program you believe is best for you. At Sequoia Behavioral Health, we have staff that will help you make the right choice and develop your individualized program to suit your needs.
Let’s discuss a little more about inpatient mental health care.
What Does Inpatient Treatment Look Like?
Inpatient treatment, also referred to as residential treatment, is where someone has an extended stay at a residential facility, receiving counseling and care in a home-like environment. Many people go to an inpatient treatment center for addiction, but they also exist for severe mental, behavioral, and personality disorders. Typically, a client stays at the residential facility for 30 days, though in some cases, they can stay longer.
Inpatient care is considered the most intensive level of treatment because it offers round-the-clock attention. You’ll generally go through multiple different therapeutic activities each day. Most residential facilities offer home-cooked meals, recreational activities, and group activities outside of therapy.
How is it Different from Outpatient Treatment?
The main difference between inpatient and outpatient treatment is that for outpatient treatment, you won’t stay at the facility overnight. You’ll do several hours of counseling then return to your own home after.
At Sequoia, we offer two types of outpatient programming. The first is our intensive outpatient program. In this program, clients will go through three hours of therapy either three or five days per week. Oftentimes, a client who completed their stay at a residential facility will continue treatment with some kind of outpatient care. However, many will only go through outpatient treatment without an inpatient stay.
The second type of outpatient care at Sequoia is our partial hospitalization program. It’s often an in-between for inpatient and intensive outpatient treatment. Clients will attend counseling and often medical interventions for six hours a day, five days per week.
Sequoia Behavioral Health offers all three levels of care at two different facilities in Mesa, Arizona. Five Factors To Consider When Choosing the Right Inpatient Facility
As you look for an inpatient facility, the quality of care matters as much as the environment. Look into not only how the staff will help you, but if you’ll feel safe and comfortable.
1. Community
One advantage of inpatient treatment is that you’re in a house with others receiving similar treatment. A community you can relate to and bond with helps treatment be more effective.
We offer group therapy at Sequoia to help clients grow, help each other by sharing their experiences, and putting mental health strategies into practice.
Being part of a strong and supportive community will not only help you on your mental health journey. The bonds you create can inspire and encourage you, as well as teach you how to hold yourself accountable.

2. Programming
The types of therapy offered at an inpatient center matters quite a bit. Sequoia offers a number of therapies that are personalized and individualized to each client’s needs. By approaching treatment from as many angles as possible, we can treat the whole person and the root of their issues.
You want to also look into the primary focus of the facility as well. At Sequoia, we base our programming in trauma-focused therapy. Trauma affects people more than they may realize. Even if you don’t necessarily look for trauma treatment, you will likely benefit from some level of trauma therapy.
3. Location
Location plays a big role when choosing your residential facility, especially if the goal is to continue on to a level of outpatient programming after.
Sequoia Behavioral health is located in Mesa, AZ, a suburb of Phoenix. While we do deal with the infamous heat, Mesa offers a lot to residential clients. In addition to being one of the safest cities in Arizona, Mesa also backs into the beautiful Superstition Mountains. We often integrate the beautiful landscape into recreational therapy and outdoor experiences.

4. Environment
The most ideal environment for recovery is one that feels like home. Having a comforting and safe environment helps with the healing process. The residential facility for Sequoia has been thoughtfully furnished to be as cozy and calming as possible. Though clients undergo all of their therapy sessions at the facility, they’ll still have a place to retreat to once they’re done with counseling for the day.
5. Financing & Insurance
The cost of residential treatment keeps a lot of people from exploring it. Yes, it can be expensive but it doesn't have to be a burden. Under the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies are required to provide some coverage for mental health care.
How much is covered depends on each company and plan. However, at Sequoia Behavioral Health, you don’t have to navigate insurance and costs on your own. We’ll walk through the process with you and do all of the heavy lifting so you can focus on recovery. Verify your insurance to learn more about financing options.
